Well, this is a subject that is near and dear to my heart. Having been raised in a dog state, it's been a tradition here in Va for generations. While still (ambush style) hunting is now very popular across the state, dog hunting is still legal. Having said that, "driving the dogs is very much a part of the hunt. To"hike to go" is a must for a successful deer hunt, as a rule, to do this type of deer hunting, the "standers" will surround the out side line of the property leaving the inside for the dogs and drivers. As driver will hike the dog till the deer is up and running, then he too will wait to see if the deer doubles back giving him a shot. I've killed many deer thats sneaking around trying to give the dogs a slip. Some clubs have gotten away from hounds as we now have big timber cut-overs and the use of "bird dogs" can be very effective as the will check out every inch of the cutover, they only get the deer up and moving, they rairly chaser the deer too far. Another form here in Va is "man driving", several hunters will form a line and move thru a piece of property hooping and hollaring. Lot's of time the deer will slip around behind the drivers so it's always good to take a stand behind the drivers. Often times they are the ones that kill the deer. Most say, over the years, guess I've tried it all and ...... It's all good. I enjoy still hunting the rut, but also, it's great to be sitting in the fall deer woods, hearing the drivers geting closer and all of a sudden, the dogs strike and ....here HE comes
