The Jicarilla Apache Reservation was established in 1887 and is home to the Jicarilla Apache Nation's headquarters and the majority of it's tribal members. Big game hunting is a strong tradition among the Jicarilla people and their land is very important to them. In 1957, the Jicarilla Game and Fish Department was created, giving the Jacarilla Nation complete jurisdiction over it's fish and wildlife resources. Over the years, this has resulted in excellent hunting experiences for all types of hunters that come to the area.
Jicarilla is home to healthy populations of big game like Mule Deer, Rocky Mountain Elk, Black Bear, Mountain Lion along with a variety of game bird and small game species. The reservation provides over 850,000 acres of huntable land. All big game trophy hunters are guided by a member of the Jicarilla Nation. Success rates are high.
Although drought conditions in the past years have affected the lakes, trout fishing and waterfowl hunting are still available for any hunter or fisherman who is interested. There are 7 lakes total, ranging from 35 to 500 acres, and stocked primarily with trout and other trophy fish.
