The Alabama Division of Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries (ADWFF) has a new records and recognition program for white-tailed deer killed in Alabama, the Records of Alabama's White-tailed Deer (RAWD). This new program allows Alabama's deer hunters to compare deer taken in their region to other areas of Alabama, as well as other states in the Southeast. It also showcases the quality animals produced by management efforts and strategies within Alabama.

As the 2007-08 deer season opens, hunters are encouraged to provide food to needy families by participating in Hunters Helping the Hungry (HHH), a program providing thousands of pounds of ground venison to area food banks. Food banks then donate the processed venison to help feed needy families. Since the program began in 1999, more than 380,000 pounds of ground venison has been donated to Alabama food banks statewide.

For the first time since records began in 1973, the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (ADCNR) Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries (WFF) Division reports this past deer season, which ended on January 31, 2007, there were no firearms or tree stand related fatal incidents. Alabama’s hunting incident rate has decreased significantly since the mandatory hunter education program was implemented in 1993. However, WFF cautions hunters to continue using safe hunting practices during other game seasons that continue in Alabama through April.
