With fall in the air and mosquito populations dwindling, hunters and other recreationists are going to the forests in droves. But because some state forest roads and trails are saturated from recent heavy rains, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) will temporarily close some areas.

Of the less-than-500 surviving whooping cranes in the United States, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources reminds hunters to watch out for at least four that are currently visiting southwestern Minnesota. These rare birds are on a temporary stopover during their fall journey to Texas.

Extensive research about youth participation in hunting has been conducted in recent years, and the results are in. Young people become hunters because adults take them hunting, and the earlier that kids start hunting the more likely they are to hunt for the rest of their lives.

DNR seeks comments on motor vehicle use plan forforest lands in East Central Minnesota

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is seeking public comments on its forest classification and motor vehicle route designation proposal for six state forests in an eight-county planning area in east-central Minnesota. The east-central forests include Land O' Lakes in Cass/Crow Wing counties; Hill River, Savanna, and Waukenabo in Aitkin County, Snake River in Kanabec County, and DAR in Pine County. The proposal also designates roads and trails on scattered DNR lands in Anoka, Aitkin, Chisago, Isanti, Kanabec, Pine, southern Cass, and Washington counties.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service today proposed continuation of liberal hunting regulations for the upcoming 2007-2008 late waterfowl seasons due to improved habitat conditions and waterfowl population estimates. Duck hunting season lengths will be 60 days in both the Atlantic and Mississippi Flyways, 74 days in the Central Flyway, and 107 days in the Pacific Flyway.

Minnesota hunters will be allowed to harvest snow geese, including blue-phased and the smaller Ross’ geese, this spring under the provisions of a federal conservation order.

Since 2000, when Minnesota began participating in the conservation order, the state spring harvest of light geese has varied dramatically from a few hundred to 6,000, depending on weather conditions. Hunting during 2008 will be open from March 1 to April 30.
