Most of the monitored bears are fitted with highly visible blaze orange colored collars. Many of the collars contain global positioning devices that collect and store data that is downloaded when researchers visit the bears in their winter dens.
“We’re asking that hunters find other bears to harvest,”
Garshelis said. “Researchers have invested an enormous amount of time and expense in these individuals, and the data stored in their collars is extremely valuable for monitoring the dynamics of our bear population.”

Bow hunters can apply to participate in the 2008 regular archery deer hunt at Camp Ripley near Little Falls beginning July 1.
Hunters may pick from one of two Sunday-Monday hunting seasons, Oct. 19-20 (code 668) or Oct. 26-27 (code 669). A total of 5,000 permits, 2,500 per two-day hunt, will be made available. Because of conflicts with military training activities this fall, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) moved the hunting dates for season one three days later, and one day later for season two.

The application deadline for the 2008 bull-only moose hunt is Friday, May 2, according to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR). A total of 247 bull permits are available in 30 zones in northeastern Minnesota for this year’s hunt, which runs Oct. 4-19, and winners are selected by drawing.
Because the moose hunt became a once-in-a-lifetime hunt in 1991, hunters who received permits for moose hunts for the 1991 hunt and later are not eligible to apply for the 2008 drawing.

Hunters harvested 48 deer during the first weekend of a special hunt in northwestern Minnesota that aims to reduce deer density and stop the potential spread of bovine tuberculosis (TB), according to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR).
The hunt began Dec. 29 and continues through Jan. 13 in Permit Area 101, which is considered the bovine TB zone in far northwestern Minnesota. It is open to hunters who have a valid, unused permit to harvest deer regardless of the zone in which a hunter was licensed.
