PIERRE, S.D. – On Saturday August 16th, starting at 8:30 p.m. the Oahe Downstream Recreation Area will offer its guests an “Evening with the Owls” Walk in the Park featuring Doug Backlund, a SD Game, Fish & Parks Park employee and local birding authority.

Doug, is an avid birder and wildlife photographer. He has worked for the Department for the past 17 years and currently works in the Wildlife Diversity Program and is the database manager for the SD Natural Heritage Program. Doug earned his Bachelor’s in Biology at Black Hills State University. “When I’m not busy at work, I’m out in the field exploring and photographing nature,” said Backlund. “Birding is my favorite hobby, followed by photography, but I have many other interests that range from insects, reptiles, amphibians, mammals, plants to just about everything that is alive or fossilized.”

Participants will be offered the opportunity to learn more about those birds of prey that hunt primarily at night and are the subject of many tall tales and folklore. “Doug knows Owls, and he will offer those in attendance the opportunity to view a great slide show at the amphitheater with his wonderful photos,” said park supervisor Pat Buscher. Guests can also examine what owls eat by looking at owl pellets and participate in a short hike to locate of the park’s owls and learn how to identify them by their appearance and sound.

For more information, call (605) 223-7722. The program is offered free of charge; although a park entrance license is required.
