Early Fall Canada Goose, Youth Waterfowl Seasons Finalized

RAPID CITY, S.D.—Regulations for the early fall Canada goose hunting season and the youth waterfowl hunting season were finalized by the S.D.
Game, Fish and Parks Commission at its July meeting in Rapid City.

Much of South Dakota will be open for the early fall Canada goose season which runs from Sept. 6 through Sept. 26. The areas closed to hunting during this season include Unit 2 which encompasses most of the counties along the Missouri River as well as portions of Fall River and Custer counties and, in a change from previous seasons, Perkins County. Also included in the closed area is Bennett County.

The early season has a daily limit of five Canada geese and a possession limit of 10. The GFP Wildlife Division Assistant Director George Vandel reminded commissioners that the daily and possession limits will go to three and six when the regular goose hunting season starts, which is proposed for Sept. 27. The regulations for that season will be finalized at the commission’s August meeting at Fort Sisseton.

The statewide youth waterfowl season is set for Sept. 20 and 21 with daily and possession limits that are the same as the regular goose and duck seasons. A change from previous seasons is an adjustment in the age requirement to allow youth who have not reached the age of 16 by the first day of the season to participate in the youth waterfowl season.
