The opening day of the Georgia turkey hunting season is Sat., Mar. 26 and the Georgia Department of Natural Resources’ Wildlife Resources Division anticipates that the 2011 season should be fair, with harvest likely down from the 2010 season. Statistics from the 2010 season harvest summary indicate that an estimated 47,275 resident Georgia hunters bagged 34,001 turkeys last year.

NWTF Turkey Shoot: An Event for Family and Fun

There's nothing quite like a day at the shooting range to strengthen a marriage and make new friends - at least that's the case for Jeff and Lynn Montjoy of Greenwood, S.C.  Jeff Montjoy, an avid hunter and longtime member of the National Wild Turkey Federation, introduced his wife to sporting clay shooting after learning about the sport from a friend. What began as a hobby quickly turned into an obsession the couple credits with helping them meet new friends and make their 20-year marriage better than ever.

Fort Stewart gains more than 271,000 new trees thanks to NWTF and partners

The National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) continues to make restoring the longleaf pine - one of America's most endangered ecosystems - a priority.  The NWTF recently signed a conservation agreement with the Fort Stewart/Hunter Army Airfield (HAAF) Partnership for Longleaf Pine Restoration to help restore the longleaf pine to areas in and near Fort Stewart in southeastern Georgia.

Turkey Shoot Sporting Clays Tourney Creates Big Dollars

More than 1,000 sporting clays enthusiasts will pour into Forsyth, Ga., Aug. 14 to Aug. 17, for the National Wild Turkey Federation's Turkey Shoot sporting clays tournament.

Over 600 of them will shoot in the event, held at the Meadows National Gun Club. Many will stop in the local Bass Pro Shops in Macon to purchase their ammunition, and will stay at local hotels throughout the four-day shoot, pouring hundreds of thousands of dollars into the local economy.

Prescribed Burns in Spring Improve Wild Turkey Habitat

Each spring, the National Wild Turkey Federation’s wildlife biologists hear the fears of concerned hunters who don't understand that prescribed burns in March and April -- months generally known as wild turkey nesting months -- are far more beneficial than harmful to wild turkey populations. However, the NWTF's wildlife biologists have research showing the years of improved nesting and brood habitat created by a growing season prescribed fire is far more important to the turkey population than the loss of a few nests.
