Hunters checked 18,485 wild turkeys during Ohio's four-week, statewide spring turkey hunting season that ended May 15, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR), Division of Wildlife. The preliminary total represents a 21 percent decrease over last year's harvest number of 23,421 -- the second-highest all-time.

Hunters must still report their harvest of turkeys but they are no longer required to take their turkey to a check station for physical inspection according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR), Division of Wildlife.

Spring wild turkey hunting opens in all 88 Ohio counties on Monday, April 18, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR), Division of Wildlife. The season continues through Sunday, May 15. "Hunters may see three-year-old gobblers this spring based on the strength of the 2008 hatch," said ODNR Wildlife Biologist Mike Reynolds. “Overall, turkey numbers should be good across the state, but the harvest will likely not top last year’s kill — the second highest all-time.”

NASHVILLE, Tenn. Nicole Hafer from Zanesville, Ohio, received the National Wild Turkey Federation's 2008 Conservation Educator of the Year Award during a special ceremony at the NWTF's 33rd annual Convention and Sport Show in Nashville. Hafer is an education specialist with the Muskingum Soil and Water Conservation District. She teaches outdoor education classes to local youth from grades K-12, in addition to courses at Zane State College.

The Northcoast Limbhangers chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation is hosting a Women in the Outdoors fishing event Saturday, August 16, at Grand River Marina in Grand River, Ohio. Women can enjoy a half-day of perch fishing from a charter boat on Lake Erie and register for their choice of two classes. Alluring jewelry making, basic fishing techniques, fishing gear selection and filleting and cooking are just a few of the classes being offered.

Each spring, the National Wild Turkey Federation’s wildlife biologists hear the fears of concerned hunters who don't understand that prescribed burns in March and April -- months generally known as wild turkey nesting months -- are far more beneficial than harmful to wild turkey populations. However, the NWTF's wildlife biologists have research showing the years of improved nesting and brood habitat created by a growing season prescribed fire is far more important to the turkey population than the loss of a few nests.
