Turkey hunters have more time this year than they have traditionally had in the past to apply for this spring’s hunt, either electronically or by telephone. The deadline to apply for the 2011 spring season has been extended by about two weeks. Applications are now being accepted through Friday, Jan. 14, wherever hunting and fishing licenses are sold, and online.
Also new this year: the youth application process is eliminated, and over-the-counter only permits will be available for the hunt’s last two time periods.

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is asking for the public's help in locating a group of feral hogs in Big Stone County.

Curt Vacek, DNR area wildlife manager at Appleton, said between 25 to 50 hogs are thought to be roaming in the vicinity of Big Stone Lake 11 miles north of Ortonville. They are thought to be of the pot-bellied variety that can reach weights of up to 300 pounds.

Richfield MN resident wins 2010 turkey stamp design contest
A painting of three turkeys near an old barn by Timothy Turenne, Richfield, will be featured on Minnesota’s 2010 Wild Turkey Stamp.

Turenne’s design was chosen from among 10 entries in a contest sponsored by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR). This is the second turkey stamp contest win for Turenne.

DNR seeks comments on motor vehicle use plan forforest lands in East Central Minnesota

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is seeking public comments on its forest classification and motor vehicle route designation proposal for six state forests in an eight-county planning area in east-central Minnesota. The east-central forests include Land O' Lakes in Cass/Crow Wing counties; Hill River, Savanna, and Waukenabo in Aitkin County, Snake River in Kanabec County, and DAR in Pine County. The proposal also designates roads and trails on scattered DNR lands in Anoka, Aitkin, Chisago, Isanti, Kanabec, Pine, southern Cass, and Washington counties.

Prescribed Burns in Spring Improve Wild Turkey Habitat

Each spring, the National Wild Turkey Federation’s wildlife biologists hear the fears of concerned hunters who don't understand that prescribed burns in March and April -- months generally known as wild turkey nesting months -- are far more beneficial than harmful to wild turkey populations. However, the NWTF's wildlife biologists have research showing the years of improved nesting and brood habitat created by a growing season prescribed fire is far more important to the turkey population than the loss of a few nests.
