Hunters heading to southwestern Minnesota will have access to an additional 6,000 acres of hunting land this fall, as the Walk-In Access program grows to more than 15,000 acres, according to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.

A severe winter followed by a wet spring contributed to a significant decline in Minnesota’s pheasant counts. According to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR), the pheasant population index declined 64 percent from 2010 and is 71 percent below the 10-year average.

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources sells about 600,000 hunting licenses each year so there will be a large number of hunters afield this fall in search of a variety of big and small game. The DNR says it’s important that each hunter put safety first to ensure an enjoyable and successful hunting trip.

Pheasants Forever and Pizza Ranch joined force again to fulfill their community obligation. The meaningful collaboration of the two encourages the youth to be aware on preserving and protecting Mother Nature’s habitat. Pizza Ranch on the other hand, encourages youth to participate in outdoor activities. Such endeavors creates camaraderie between youths while at the same time fosters youth’s hunting prowess.

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is asking for the public's help in locating a group of feral hogs in Big Stone County. Curt Vacek, DNR area wildlife manager at Appleton, said between 25 to 50 hogs are thought to be roaming in the vicinity of Big Stone Lake 11 miles north of Ortonville. They are thought to be of the pot-bellied variety that can reach weights of up to 300 pounds.

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is accepting comments through Feb. 25 on a number of hunting regulations, including many temporary rules that would added to state game and fish laws this year. The proposals cover a variety of areas pertaining to deer registration; deer licenses, deer zone descriptions, deer hunter selection, bear hunter selection and prairie chicken area designation.

In Minnesota, the Department of Natural Resources has partnered with Pheasants Forever chapters across the state to host youth hunts. Across the state, they had 200+ kids out last weekend, enjoying time afield chasing the wily rooster.

With fall in the air and mosquito populations dwindling, hunters and other recreationists are going to the forests in droves. But because some state forest roads and trails are saturated from recent heavy rains, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) will temporarily close some areas.

Despite a cool, wet spring that caused a 24-percent drop in Minnesota’s pheasant index, the estimated number of pheasants in Minnesota remains at its 10-year average.
“The southwest likely will provide the best opportunities for pheasant hunters,” said Kurt Haroldson, Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) wildlife research biologist. “Minnesota’s west central, south central and east central regions also are likely to provide good pheasant harvest opportunities.”

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) will release its annual roadside wildlife survey on Tuesday, Sept. 9.
The report summarizes roadside counts of pheasants, gray (Hungarian) partridge, cottontail rabbits, white-tailed jackrabbits and other wildlife observed in the early morning hours during the first two weeks of August throughout the farmland region of Minnesota.

Extensive research about youth participation in hunting has been conducted in recent years, and the results are in. Young people become hunters because adults take them hunting, and the earlier that kids start hunting the more likely they are to hunt for the rest of their lives.

Last week, Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever biologists met with officials from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and political leaders in Washington, DC. The meetings focused on conservation opportunities in the new Farm Bill. For PF/QF, the meetings marked an important transition from the Farm Bill legislative process to implementation.

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is seeking public comments on its forest classification and motor vehicle route designation proposal for six state forests in an eight-county planning area in east-central Minnesota. The east-central forests include Land O' Lakes in Cass/Crow Wing counties; Hill River, Savanna, and Waukenabo in Aitkin County, Snake River in Kanabec County, and DAR in Pine County. The proposal also designates roads and trails on scattered DNR lands in Anoka, Aitkin, Chisago, Isanti, Kanabec, Pine, southern Cass, and Washington counties.
