Nebraska deer hunters produced a big year in 2010, setting records for overall and antlerless whitetail harvest, according to the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission.

The total deer harvest during the 2010 season was 88,034 (77,028 whitetails and 10,709 mule deer). While a record 37,967 whitetail bucks were killed, a record 39,198 antlerless whitetails also were killed – marking the first time the antlerless whitetail harvest surpassed whitetail buck harvest.

The Nebraska Game and Parks Board of Commissioners approved the wider use of crossbows as big game hunting equipment at its Oct. 28 in Norfolk.
All restrictions on crossbows have been removed, including the disability provision and draw weight. The new regulations allow, starting in 2011, crossbows as legal archery equipment for big game (deer, antelope, elk, turkey, and bighorn sheep).

A Nebraska bill aimed at recruiting the next generation of hunters has been signed into law by Gov. Dave Heineman. The new law creates an apprentice hunter education exemption certificate, allowing experienced hunters to take a newcomer hunting before the completion of a hunter education course.
