Waterfowl Hunting - The "Reality" Of It All
In our final episode of Season 2, we take a look back on our successful waterfowl hunting season. It took many miles of travel and hours of scouting, but the end result was a great year. We try to show the good with the bad when it comes to waterfowl hunting. Every hunt is not about shooting limits and many hunts we come away empty handed, but by putting the time in a waterfowl hunter can have some memorable hunts. Thank you for watching Fowled Reality Season 2!

Snow Goose Hunting: Decoys and Blind Concealment
Snow goose hunting doesn't have an exact science. Put 10 snow goose hunters in an area and different fields will be selected, decoys will be arranged differently, and blinds will we be situated in different areas of the spread. This video shows how we typically setup for snow goose hunting, but there are a 100 ways to do. Many times, how we start the day is completely different from how our decoys and blinds end up at the end of the day. Reading the birds and adjusting according is the most important aspect of snow goose hunting.

Snow Goose Hunting: Scouting
Snow goose hunting success can come from spending time scouting. You have to know where the snow geese are, where they're feeding, and how they're getting there. Even with hours of driving and hundreds of miles, all the scouting doesn't always pay off. Mother nature heavily dictates the rate of the migration and often times snow geese will fly different routes and feed in different fields on a daily basis. The poor weather and unpredictableness of snow geese left us frustrated during most of our hunts during the conservation season in Illinois. Despite our best efforts to find good fields to snow goose hunt in, the geese always seemed to stay a step ahead of us, but we managed to scratch together a few good hunts.

Duck Hunting Late Season In Missouri
Duck hunting late season birds can be a challenge. Ducks have been pursued for six months and have seen/heard it all, but all hope is not lost. Put in time scouting, take extra time getting concealed, and mix up your decoys and calling and you could be in for a great hunt. This week we're with C&L Outdoors for a awesome late season duck hunt on a small farm pond in southwest Missouri. There were hundreds if not thousands of birds on this pond the day we scouted it. We utilized around a dozen decoys and called sparingly to end up with a great bag of mallards.

Duck Hunting Rivers, Lakes, and Ponds
Duck hunting often takes place on water sources. Different water sources determine you strategies for calling and decoying ducks into your decoy spread. Layout boat duck hunting is popular on large lakes such as lake Erie while large spreads of full body and floater ducks and geese are the way to go while hunting on rivers. For smaller bodies of water such as ponds and flooded food sources, a mixed species spread that looks natural is a great way to lure in both ducks and geese. This week, our duck hunting video takes an in-depth look at how to hunt these water sources.

Duck Hunting Mallards in North Dakota Corn Fields
Duck hunting in dry fields is all about adapting to changing weather conditions and where the ducks want to be. During our trip to North Dakota to hunt mallards with Muddy Dog Outdoors we experienced a wide variety of weather that forced us to always be adjusting our hunting locations. There were also large numbers of snow geese in the area that quickly depleted fresh food sources. Through our scouting we were able to locate fresh food sources that were being used by feeding flocks of mallards and the snow geese had yet to feed out. Adapting in duck hunting can be be as drastic as changing setups from water sources to dry fields or as subtle as the way you are calling. To be successful you have to be willing to change things up. Don't be set in your ways and pay attention during scouting and the hunt as to what the ducks are showing you.

Duck and Goose Hunting Canada
Our duck and goose hunting season began in Canada. Despite warm weather and a summer drought, we still had a good trip. We didn't shoot ducks and Canada geese like we had planned, but there were plenty of snow geese around. Our video this week showcases a few of our duck and goose hunts while up there and also gives you some information on what to expect and bring if you make the trip to waterfowl hunt in Canada.

Snow Goose Hunting: Scouting Leads to a 100 Bird Day
In snow goose hunting, scouting is very important. Couple it with being hidden and a little bit of luck and you have a recipe for success. We found a large concentration of snow geese using three different roost holes and traveling just a few miles to feed. We decided upon a field that had 10,000+ snow geese feeding in it. This barley field was located between the roosts and other feeding fields. We had the perfect snow goose hunting combination of the "X" field that was in a great flight line.

Concealment for Goose and Duck Hunting
For successful Canada, snow goose and duck hunting, hunters must be hidden. It doesn't matter how many ducks or geese are using a field or pond if you're not concealed in the stubble or weeds nearby. This week, we take a look at a couple hunts with different outcomes. The first, a snow goose hunt, was from a barley field in central Canada. Thousands of snow geese were using a field with a strip of tall stubble that was perfect for hiding layout blinds. Our second hunt creates the question, do you hunt the "X" with a poor hide or do you go nearby where you can hide and try to pull the birds off their spot? We elected to hunt a small pond that was being used as a mid-day loafing area for a good number of Canada Geese along with a few ducks and snow geese. The drought that effected Canada had dropped the water level on the pond and left a 10-15 yard wide exposed bank with sparse weeds throughout. We had collected bags of barley the day before and covered our blinds with it as well as

Fowled Reality 2.0
After a successful, but tough year in 2011-2012, we set out to build on season 1. Last year we focused on telling the story behind the hunt. This year will be no different, but in addition, we will go more in-depth with why the hunt was a success. The reasons behind limit filled hunts are often the same day after day. Our duck hunting and goose hunting videos are going to focus solely on a single topic, break it down, and explain it. This year, we've added a couple new Illinois hunters to the Fowled Reality team and we've also teamed up with Muddy Dog Outdoors. They offer an expanding line of waterfowl hunting products that includes custom lanyards, calls, decoys, and blinds. Muddy Dog Outdoors has everything for your waterfowl hunting needs. Our videos this year will showcase hunts from all across the Mississippi and Central Flyways. We've traveled the country chasing the migration. We'll showcase hunts from Canada, North Dakota, Missouri, Michigan, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and in ou

Duck Hunting Oklahoma Greenheads - First Light - The Management Advantage #22
This week's show is about family, old friends, and meeting new ones. We recently traveled to Oklahoma for some duck hunting with IT Director, Blake Hagemeier's Fowled Reality, to meet up with TMA viewer Josh Dickerson of First Light Gear. Josh has been a loyal TMA viewer and has taken much of what he has learned from, Jody Pagan's waterfowl management and put it to practice. He recently acquired a piece of property that borders two rivers. Josh has thinned out a few acres of trees and built a levy system to hold water for duck hunting. This year he planted millet in the pools in hopes of attracting waterfowl, but the deer got to the millet before the season. After a late Spring drawdown, moist soil plants should germinate in the mud flats created left behind by the water and begin to provide ample forage for migrating ducks. To further the management program on his property, Josh has begun trapping predators and is working on controlling the hog population. What he is doing is a

Duck Hunting Corn Fields in North Dakota - Fowled Reality Season 2 Teaser
Our duck hunting is off to a great start this year. We traveled to North Dakota a few weeks ago for some freelance mallard hunting. In just a week of hunting we experienced a variety of weather conditions which made for some tough duck hunting. Through scouting and adapting, we were able to have a stellar week of killing mallards in dry fields with the guys from Muddy Dog Outdoors. The footage is incredible and this video is a sneak peak of what's to come from Fowled Reality in season 2! Stay tuned to http://www.fowledreality.com for the full episode in the coming months.

Waterfowl Management for Duck Hunting- The Management Advantage #4
Farmers and deer managers alike will tell you that most weeds are bad. When it comes to waterfowl management, beneficial weeds in moist soil environments play a huge role in a duck's diet and lead to successful duck hunting. Providing these beneficial weeds is cost-effective because they are already found in the seed bank. With correctly timed soil disturbance and proper tillage, these weeds and grasses will spring to life and provide thousands of pounds of forage for wintering and migrating ducks. In all reality, you are farming for weeds. Correctly doing so prevents undesirable vegetation, but it requires knowing what to do in the given situation and when to do it. We took The Firminator to uncharted ground in the duck capital of the world, which is home to some of the toughest soils in the country to manage. It proved to worked just as well in forested openings and wetland areas for duck hunting as it does in a one acre secluded food plot for deer hunting in the Midwest. Instead

Speck and Snow Goose Hunting To End the Season: Fowled Reality EP6
Snow goose hunting had dominated our January and what better way to end the waterfowl season than to do some more snow goose and speck hunting in southern Illinois with champion goose caller Mike Smothers. We had an awesome setup in a field filled with sheetwater. Geese and ducks were everywhere! We had a great hide and awesome calling which led to a great end of the season killing snow geese!

Snow Goose and Speck Hunting in Southern Illinois: Fowled Reality EP5
Snow geese in southern Illinois saved our season! We had hopes of ending our duck season in Illinois at Ryne's place, but just as the rest of the season had gone, plans seldom worked during this duck season. With no ducks nor Canada Geese around, Ryne and buddy Scott Madison located some snow geese in southern Illinois and gained access to a feeding field. We knew it would be a challenge during the regular season since we were limited to mouth calling, but the scouting, knocking on doors, and hard work with hundreds of snow goose and speck decoys led to excellent weekend!

Duck and Goose Hunting Warm Weather: Fowled Reality EP4
This duck and goose hunting season was characterized by unseasonably warm temperatures all across the midwest. At this point in our season we were driving hundreds of miles just to get on a few birds and sometimes all the scouting we did didn't pan out with a successful hunt. We did manage to kill a few ducks at Reelfoot Lake in Tennessee and a few more near our home in the rain, but the Canada goose hunting was tough in the southern part of Illinois this year.

Duck Hunting Grind - Migration Smackdown: Fowled Reality EP3
After a decent start to the waterfowl season the duck hunting started to slow down. Warm weather had taken over and our duck hunting success started to dwindle. For months we had a trip planned to duck hunt with some friends in Southern Illinois and the forecast finally called for a stout cold front to move through in the middle of the weekend. In this duck hunting episode we experience some of the best and worst duck hunting has to offer in southern Illinois.

Duck Hunting Opening day in Illinois: Fowled Reality EP2
This duck hunting video showcases the start of the Fowled Reality season. It started in the summer at the state blind drawing with no success. Then, the hunting season was underway and we traveled to northern Missouri with the guys from Muddy Dog Outdoors and finally had some success duck hunting in our home state of Illinois during the south central zone opener. The weather in the early season was not great for duck hunting. We had a few cool days, but not real cold snap to start the fall. Some of the calendar migration ducks were making their way south, but not many at this point in the season. Most of what we were seeing were resident birds using the river and power plant lake. It still made a for a good opening day. We got to spend some time in the pit in a corn field next to a small flooded pothole and think about the waterfowl season to come.

Our Fowled Reality of Waterfowl Hunting: Fowled Reality EP1
Our waterfowl season is chracterized by cold mornings, short nights and long drives to find ducks and geese. This isn't an every day duck and goose hunting smash. Fowled Reality is scouting, long drives, and hours of decoy setting to put birds on the ground. It doesn't always come together, but we do our best to document the highs and the lows and why it's works or doesn't.

Wood Ducks, Yearly maintaining wood duck boxes Ducks Unlimited
This is a video of how we maintain our Wood duck boxes on our property in Connecticut. Each year Wood duck boxes have to be cleaned and repaired to have them ready for the next breeding season. There are thousends of Wood Duck boxes all across America, most of them are put up and installed by hunters. The fact is if it were not for hunters and groups like Ducks Unlimited and Delta Waterfowl the Wood ducks would be a very rare bird. Peta and Greenpeace maintaine absolutly no Wood Duck boxes but they like to take credit for the return of the population of the Wood Duck. For a fun project with your kid build a few boxes and get permission to put them on just about any pond you see in your area, a kid feels a certin amount of pride to know that he/she made it possable for a brood of Wood ducks to succesfully hatch and flurish. We intended to shoot one video but we had to do it in two parts, part two is installing new duck boxes on poles for future nesting ducks.
