On a small barrier island called Assateague, hunters can experience a diverse population of ducks and geese. The island is a National Wildlife Refuge and the home to the world famous Chincoteague ponies.
A typical day begins at 5:00 a.m. when the hunting party meets for breakfast at a local restaurant. The party then departs from Andys’ private dock via boat en route to one of his many blinds. They include stationary plywood blinds on marshland leased from the Refuge and pole blinds placed around the area. Hundreds of decoys are utilized to attract a variety of birds. A hunter could expect to encounter Black Ducks, Mallards, Pintails, Gadwalls, Widgeons, Shovelbills, Greenwing Teal, Bufflehead, Bluebills, Hooded and Red-breasted Mergansers, Brant and Canada and Snow Geese during the season. Each group is provided with a hand-held radio for communication. Andy remains with the party for the entire day - from dawn to dusk. He is available to sight and retrieve birds, as well as relocating hunters to other blinds when conditions warrant. After an enjoyable days’ hunt, the group often gathers for a recap of the days’ events and to dine on fresh seafood delicacies at an island restaurant.
