Do Trail Cameras Spook Deer?

According to this article it's not the scent, flash or noise from the camera that spook deer it''s the placement of the camera. What do you think?

Shed Hunting

I have been out a couple of times looking for shed antlers and have not found one yet? Two weeks ago I moved around my game cameras to pattern turkeys for the spring and I checked it today. Now I know why I have not found any sheds, on my game camera I had a small six pointer and 120 inch eight pointer? I also had a ton of pictures of does (no turkeys). Some of my friends have found sheds, but not me. I am going to go out and look for sheds one more time after the 14 inches of snow melts. Anyone else finding any good sheds?

Deer Population

Here in Illinois some counties have late season doe only for gun hunters. A few of my friends had not field their tags and wanted me to join them on a deer drive. We drove three different farms and only kicked up two deer, small buck and a doe. The three farms were about 300 acres and only two deer. They wondered why they had not been seeing deer all year. In Illinois the deer numbers have fallen over the last five years. They issue more permits and more and more people are hunting. Good for the state and the industry, but bad on the deer population. I have been hunting my in-laws farm which is about 1,000 acres for 15 years. I usually take two deer a year off the land for meat and if the opportunity presents its self a mature buck. In years past I would see 10-15 deer a night while hunting, now I am luck to even see a deer. Blue Tongue was bad in our area this year, but I never found any dead deer on the property that I hunt. I would like to see the state change some of their hunting laws and hunters have better hunting ethics to get the population back up to what it was in years past. The state and hunters have to work together to make this happen.

What are your thoughts on late season doe only?

Many people have different thoughts on late season doe only. Some believe it is good for the population of deer, where others believe that this hurts the population. What are your thoughts?

What You Would Want for The Perfect Hunt

Illinois gun season opened up this morning and what a beautiful morning it was. After a late night of coaching junior high girls basketball, I rushed home to get my gear together for an early morning hunt. I could only videotape in the morning so I could get back and teach and to be at practice after school. When I awoke this morning is was a beautiful 27 degrees with no wind and a heavy frost. This was going to be the morning when all the deer in the woods would be moving. Soon as it was light out we heard the first shots of Illinois gun season. The first hour of day light came and gone with us only seeing a coyote. The next hour only squirrels and birds. It was not until nine o'clock when we seen our first deer. It was about 150 yards through the woods with its nose to the ground. We tried grunting and snort wheezing, but he had other things on his mind. From what we could tell he was about 140 inch nine pointer. The weather was great, the time spent in the woods was great, and we did see a nice buck. Things can change in the deer woods like a flick of a light switch, so stay after them!

Illinois Gun Season

The first season of Illinois gun season was better than the second season for rut activity and weather. First season many people seen bucks chasing doe and the temperature was in the low 40s for the high. Deer movement was pretty good. The young man that I was mentoring missed a 140 inch buck that I grunted in and he passed on a small six pointer. A few big bucks where taken in my area, but no monsters like in years past. Second season the temperatures got up into the 70s. Deer movement was slow with the temperatures and all of the pressure from first season. Seen a few small buck with doe, but no shooters. One of my hunting buddies girl friend was lucky enough to be in the right spot at the right time during the second season, as she harvested her first buck.

I am ready for the weather to get cold and snow on the ground. That should get the big bucks back up on their feet and into the food sources.

Uncle John is Back for Hunting Season Louisiana

Hi folks rumors of my death are unfounded....I went back in the Karate Teaching business and doing well. You will find several new members like Dan Murrill from the National College of the Martial art along with grand master Lou Angel. Real cool guys and NRA members.

Not much to say on La dove hunting only got to go one time. Audrey our little Karate Girl got to go hunting but no birds. Cathy and April (Betty Boop) got new rifles. Cathy got a CZ-455 lux in .22 magnum. This is a true hunter, booth Audrey and Cathy have been tearing up the Ft Plolk range in the "Flay Swatter" shoot. Both the CZ 22 long rifle and magnum shoot like target rifle.

Karate kids at the Okamikai must qualify with a 22 rifle before they can make a Purple Belt, Audrey 11 years old had no problem and proceeded to go world class with the rest of her team in the last two tournaments.

I'll be doing a Review on the CZ-455 22 mag soon as a feature. And now for your Lemon Gun of the Year. Betty Boop wanted a rifle 444 marlin in Single Shot. Cathy wanted one too but wanted to see what Betty decided on. both of these gal are not recoil shy. Betty is a 5th Degree Black Belt and Cathy once shot with the Clark team. She bought a CVA Optima and I put it together...I really did a good job.

First the factory scope mounts and ring were too low for a 40 mm bell scope but a little shimming in the rings fixed the first problem. Fort Polk Shooting Complex is my second home and most of my kids and students dwell there as well. So I arrived with quite an entourage..

Cathy went to work shooting flys with the CZ 22 mag and I sighted in the 444 for Betty Boop. I handed it to her and she fired three good shots and the gun fell apart. The the tap stud that connect the fore end to the barrel stripped away from the dovetail slot in the barrel. It could not be fixed at our shop so it went back to the CVA Company along with an Uncle John phone call the next day....

CVA was very nice. I wasn't so concerned other than I have to return to the range tomorrow and do it all over again this time with a H&R Handi Rifle in 444 which I recommended in the first place....Cathy got her one too.

Still giving CVA the benifit of the doubt, I want a CVA Scout rifle. Since I have Karate Kids biting at the bit to go deer hunting with the Grandpa/Grand Master I have to have a youth gun in the house. Already have the 44 mag H&R "Pink Tiger" and Audrey staked a claim on that I found they didn't have the one i was looking for. So while I was griping about the Optima I told them I wanted a Scout in 35 Remington for adults as well as Youth to use in the Simeone Tribe. They have a 35 Whealen but after many deer shot with a 350 Rem Mag the ballistic equal I said 35 Remington all the way. It seems CVA agrees with me and referred me to their booth at the Las Vegas Shot Show.... They hinted to an addition to the caliber line in 35 Remington so would somebody going to the Shot Show check on this for me. I want a CVA Scout Rifle right now in 35 Rem Pass it on.

Hunting Buddy

The first few weeks of Illinois bow season has been a little slow, with only seeing a handful of doe and small bucks. This past weekend I took a hunting buddy with me that has been hunting with me now for five years. I was thinking that my hunting buddy would bring me a little luck and get an opportunity to shoot a doe. We had a good time with each other and shared stories while up in the tree stand. We did see one doe on the other end of the field, but no shot. The time we spent together is memories we will have together and we are planing another trip to the woods together real soon.

It seems like every year at around this time I find myself buying a new stand or two. Even though I have several, I always try to pick up an extra lock-on or climber. Personally, I have 6 lock-on's and 5 climber's. My lock-on's are all different brands but I love my Big Game Treestands. My climber's are all Ol' Man. That's what I learned to climb on and I just can't bring myself to buy anything else. I don't use any ladder stands but I'm not opposed to them.

What about y'all? How many stands to you own/use? What kind are they? What do you like/dislike about them?

How much "stuff" do you bring to the stand?

I'm sitting here 25' up a tree with my binoculars around and grunt call around my neck, a Thermacell in my front pocket, my rangefinder and bow hanging on a hook next to me, and a fanny pack under the seat of my lock-on. It seems like a lot but it's all stuff I feel I need for a hunt. What do you carry to the stand when you hunt?

First Deer for Youth

This past summer a youth that I had in class contacted me to see if I would take him deer hunting for the first time. This young man lost his father last year. Went over to his house taught him how to clean his shotgun and proper care of a firearm. Went out a few weeks before youth season to checkout his family farm. Found a good place to setup a blind with some good deer sign. From that point till opening morning of Illinois youth deer season this young man called many times to ask questions. Opening morning we only seen a loose cow from the neighbors farm. That afternoon went back out and around 4:30 p.m. a doe stepped out of the CRP and it was game over. I think we have got a lifetime hunter now, he is hooked.
