White-tailed deer are very adaptable and occupy a wide range of habitats. In Indiana, preferred habitat includes a combination of woodland, brushy areas, and agricultural land. The presence of deer in some of Indiana's most agriculturally intensive and urbanized counties is evidence of their adaptability. Deer habitat is found in every Indiana county, but the abundance of habitat varies widely among counties. Indiana Hunters succeed in '07 despite deer disease by host

Record reports of a viral disease affecting white-tailed deer seemed to have minimal impact on the 2007 hunting seasons in Indiana, as hunters harvested 124,427 deer.

Top Public Deer Hunting Areas In Indiana:

For public hunting in Indiana check out the Hoosier National Forest.  The Hoosier National Forest is composed fo 200,000 acres  scattered over a few different tracts in the southern part of Indiana.  Another popular stop for Indiana deer hunters is the 3,400 acre Tri-County Fish and Wildlife Area in Kosciusko County.  There are also several Fish and Wildlife areas in Kingsbury and Kankakee that offer some great habitat for deer hunting.

The deer count in Indiana has been on the increase since 1999 according to the Indiana DNR.

According to deer biologist Chad Stewart Indiana deer hunters could expect to see record harvest this season. The Deer in Indiana are deer scattered all across the state, but urban areas hold the most potential for the 2008 season according to Stewart. The urban season starts on September 15th and bowhunters can kill up to four deer (One of the more liberal deer tag limits in the US), but only one of them can be a buck. According to Stewart it is pretty typical for some nice bucks to be harvested durring the urban season. This year the state of Indiana is trying to attract more deer hunters to the woods by allowing new hunters who have not completed a Indiana hunters safety course to harvest a deer as long as that new hunter is accompanied by a mentor.  To become a mentor in the state of Indiana you must have a valid hunting license and be 18 years old or older.
