Alabama Whitetail Deer Hunting
The Whitetail deer is one of the most recognized and hunted wildlife species in Alabama. The Deer heard in Alabama was estimated to be close to 1,750,000 in 2000, a huge swing from the early 1900's when the Alabama deer population was beleived to be around 2000 deer total. Due to years of whitetail management efforts and restocking efforts in the 1930's 50's and 60's deer populations have rebounded. The majority of deer restocked in Alabama were from sources within the state and assumed to have been O. v. virginianus. Deer from several other states, including Arkansas, Georgia, Michigan, North Carolina, Ohio, Texas, and Wisconsin, were used to a much lesser degree in restocking several areas around Alabama.
The terrain in Alabama ranges from farm land to coastal marshes and harsh mountains, and the Alabama whitetail deer seems to survive and thrive across all the different Alabama habitats. Historically many of the big bucks taken in Alabama have come from the area in the south central part of the state known as The "Black Belt". The Black Belt's rutt is typically in January and offer the hunter a great chance to take a nice buck.
