I just purchased a new turkey mouth call and I would love to find more information on  how to use diaphragm turkey calls.

Can anyone help me out?

One of our pro staff guys - Archer, just wrote a great article on this very topic:   how to use diaphram turkey call

It has some great advice.  In fact, I went and got out my mouth call and tried to do a few of the calls

Thanks,  it is a really good article.  The sounds were very helpful as well.  I probally look pretty funny driving to work trying to make turkey sounds.

So I read Archer's article on mouth turkey calls and then went out and purchased one (3 came in the pack) and the instructions say the call should be placed firmly on the roof or your mouth.  I've cut down my call as far as it can go and it still wont fit on the roof of my mouth.  Anyone have any advice on how the thing is suppose to go in your mouth?

A friend of mine says he bends the metal frame of the call over his barrel to fit his pallet.  I know alot of the new mouth calls are plastic so this won't work, but on the metal frame calls you can give this a try.

jsimmons,

When I first got into using the Turkey mouth calls, I had the same problem, a small pallet. I trimmed numerous calls but still couldn't make much more then a wounded duck call. This will sound bizarre to a lot of people, but it worked for me. I put the call in backwards so the open end of the "horseshoe" was towards the back of my mouth. Instead of blowing air out, I sucked air in. BE CAREFUL NOT TO CHOKE ON THE CALL. It is not intended to be used that way. With practice, I got really good at it for most of the calls. After a while, I tried using the call the way it was intended and it worked great. I learned how to control the sound even though it doesn't fit perfectly in the roof of my mouth. Call me crazy, but it worked for me!?!?

They can be a little harder to find, but I've seen a few "Youth" diapharm calls that seem to be a bit smaller as a option as well.

If the call has a metal frame you can try bending it a bit around a gun barrel. Between that and triming it down you should be able to make it fit. Getting it in your mouth is the easy part.  Blowing it is the hard part...  Practice, Pratice, Pratice!!!!!
