Hey everyone, I am new to turkey hunting and looking to purchase my first call. There are tons of them out there. Any suggestions? I am thinking the box call looks like it would be the easiest to use for a guy like me with no turkey hunting experience.

Thanks,

Jeff

I think the must have is a slate call. I also carry a box call. Both the slate and box call work good for windy days. They are loud enough to broadcast a ways in the wind and noise. I also carry a few different mouth calls (usually different brands) so that I can imitate at least a few different hens. Start calling soft and if you don't get a response for at least 20 minutes you can start to slowly increase the volume of your calls. Good Luck and Happy Hunting!

I think your right Jeff. The box is easy to use, but it requires at least one hand to use.  Same goes for slate.  The mouth calls minimize your movements when the Toms are close.  You can purchase three piece sets with a video pretty cheap. You can practice the mouth calls while driving to work! I would get the slate, the mouth calls and an owl call as well.

Thanks for the advice guys. I'm off to Gander Mountain to blow my kids inheritance on calls. So what does the owl call do?

The Owl call is used to locate Turkey packs from a distance.  When you hoot the turkeys will "shock gobble" and thus give away their location.  It will save you a ton of time by knowing where to set up.  It works from long distances and is only used in locating.  The calls shouldn't set you back too much.  Good luck and keep us updated!

It's my first turkey unt this year and was wondering what to focus on for my first time. What kind of advice is out there to just get started and feel some success??

I'm startign off this year too and my plan is to just figure out how to set up.  I'm going with some freinds who have some experience so I am relying on them for the calls.  I figure this year will be a learing year and hopefully get a lucky shot in.

Buckshot, One mistake that I made and I believe a lot of newbies make is they over-work the calls. I you call a couple times and don't hear a bird respond, wait ten miutes and try again. If you have no response then, switch calls. It may be the same type of call ie. a second boxcall.

I purchased a owl locator call and it sounds really weird.  If you blow to softley on the call it sounds like a duck and a hard call dosen't sound like any owl I've ever heard.

I have the same call from Primos.  I'm not sure it sounds like a owl, but it does get the turkeys to gobble back at night.  Pick up a crow call for a good day time locator turkey call.

I've heard of some guys using a air horn can or even a loud car radio. I'm not sure I would use a air horn wiht a bunch of other hunters with guns in the woods. The point is your locator calls don't need to be great. Most turkey's will gobble at about any loud noise at night in my experience.
