4myhunting. Thanks for the tip. I thought I missed the boat on my spring turkey permit. I'm heading over to the DNR service station right now. What's the deal with late season. Is it just to warm or are the turkeys a bit gun shy by the time late may rolls around in Wisconsin.
Any late season suggestions you can offer? |

Ask 100 landowners to hunt deer on their land and you might find one spot to hunt. Ask the same landowners to hunt turkey and I doubt you will have the time to scout them all. Find a few spots that the birds haven’t seen pressure and you can have success in late season. While most every hunter would prefer the first session, there are advantages to the last one. First, the foliage will give you cover. This is a big advantage to getting closer to a roosted tom that is scanning the ground for hens. Second, when the tom is on the hens it can be impossible to pull him off. By the last season the toms can be running short on ready hens and will start reacting to your calls again. Last, what else are you going to do until bow season? It’s kinda like the last day of summer when I was a kid.

I guess I didn't read your post very close. I stopped by the dnr service center to try and nab a left over permit and found out they don't go on sale till next week. According to the girl at the counter you need to get there early but I guess a wek is a bit to early. Want to go 4myhunting? |

Welcome to the board. It seems like a smail but great group of guys. I hear the permits go fast so get there earily.

| I am going up to the Black River Falls Area in Northern Wisconsin. It is a lot of big woods and not a lot of fields. Any advice? I have seen a ton of turkeys in that area during bow and gun season. Should I expect to find them in the same areas during spring turkey season? |

So we just got back for our 3 day Black River Falls turkey hunt and it was slim pickens. The first day we over slept a bit so we weren't exactally in the woods prime time AM, but we saw quite a bit of sign in the areas we planned to hunt a got to do quite a bit of scouting. That night we tried to find some gobblers and put them to bed, but we didn't have much luck with that. We were using crow and owl calls and we couldn't locate any birds but we did happen to spot a few roosted up in a tree just off a logging road so the next morning we snuck into that area and set up, but the birds were all gone. Something must have sooked them.
We got one gobble response a long ways a way, but the bird never came in and after a while we tried working in towards the area, but couldn't get any further responses. We walked a lot of logging roads trying to locate birds, but didn't have much luck. On the up side, we found some great new bow hunting spots to check out come fall.
I talked to a few locals as well as a local game warden and they all seemed to think that the hunting in the big woods was much tuffer then hunting mixed ag land. I also heard from one guy that the winter kill was high this year.
We did find a lot of sign however.
All in all it was a fun trip and we got to see and explore a lot of country. We even got to see a badger (a first for me in the woods)
