I got this spam email advertising a deer motion detector.  It basically consisted of two motion sensors that looked like the sensors that come on the bottom of a outdoor light that turns on when there is movement and a control box that had lights on it.  The idea behind it was you set these motion sensing boxes around your stand on deer trails and as a deer comes towards your position the lights flash on your control box so you get a warning that they are comming.

The whole system was like $45.    But my question to you guys is do you even think this would be useful?  It seems like a waste of $45 to me.

The guys that make these spammed another message board with adds about the deer motion detector. i don't know of anyone who has actually purchased one yet. I use my spidey senses to detect deer coming.

I guess that I am a traditionalist (somewhat) when it comes to hunting. This motion detector is not for me. Basically it is a canabalized motion detector that many of us have on our garage. I used one once to make a home made trail cam when they were still really expensive to buy.

I saw one of those it looked like a motion detctor from a outside light.  It sounds like a big waste of money to me.  I could use one for my kids in the yard though.

Archer,

I always wanted to try and make my own trail cam.  How did you hook up the camera to the motion detector?  Does it have to be a digital camera?

The camera that I used was not digital, thats why I don't use it any more (pain). Trail cams are so cheap now that I wouldn't bother making your own. By the time you buy everything and figure out how to connect it all, not worth it.

I tried to build a few trail cams back in the day using a light motion detector and film camera. I never seemed to be able to get the trigger speed that the new digital motion cameras get and the price of film quickly out weighs the cost of a digital scouting cam.
