Time to zero your deer rifle. Well first go read these articles, "A bullet in flight" "Calling the Shot" and "Ten Dumb things we do to Miss a Deer."

Have a look at my set up, of me shooting my Remington700 30-06. If you will notice I use a two point bench rest system but I dont use a vise like rest. If you dont let the rifle recoil freely it can change point of impact.

Make sure your rifle is clean and all the screws are tight. The first shot will most likely not be on target unless you zero a cold bore shot. Then if I'm not ging to let the gun sit a while I leave the bore fowled then you get a perfectly accurate shot the first time.

Now for me I zero a deer rifle at 50 yards, everyone else does it at 100 thinking long shot. The young soldiers all go for a 200 yard zero thinking Sniper. Most deer I shoot are about 30 to 50 yards. Now that I have my Lazer range finder I have proved to myself my longest shot is about 100 yards..but that is Louisiana deer hunting. If it were New Mexico it would be a 200 yard zero. You have to know your average shot for your own area.

My 45-70 and 325 WSM are already good to go, today we zeroed the Pink Tiger H&R 44 mag with Hornady flextip bullets, which was previoulsly zeroed with Winchester 240 soft points. I already new there was a 25 click difference in trajectory between a Winchester and Hornady round, so I just made the clicks fired one round and it was on. Aunt Sandy made a final adjustment for her eyes and shot a 1 inch 3 shot group dead on at 50 yards. Actully she is good to 200 yards as she has practiced all summer.

Next was my Idea of a brush gun, A CZ-584 combination gun "The Thing" if you want one you have to go to CZ-USA and click on the Bruno rifles...they call it something else now but it is the same firearm. 12 guage over 30-06..No rifle bullet will actully go through brush but buckshot at close range will. Because the shot string clears a path for the ones behind it. Inside 50 yards a running deer with buck shot is no more difficult than a running cottontail rabbit. If you use 000 buck it only takes one hit and you get 10 pellets. Never the less at a longer range I have the 30-06 barrel and that is as accurate as the 700 Remington.

Today this gun was still dead on from the last 10 years with the Burris 3X9 scope so all I had to do was fire a confirmation shot.

Now all this caught the attention of the rest of the shooters who were burning up hundreds of dollars in ammunition. I can understand shooting for the pleaure of shooting, but at the high cost of premium ammo, the statement of "I cant see where I'm hitting," was heard all day. They just didnt know what they were doing, and their egos kept them from asking one of two range masters, how to shoot.

James Callaway (Sr. Range Master) stated the truth, they wont listen and they dont care.
