I've been reading a few articles that state that the folloding in the midwest has wiped out a lot of the pheasant nesting habitat in Iowa.  That's bad news for hunters.   In addition and perhaps a bigger problem is that with the high prices of corn and grains these days more and more crp land which is directly responsible for boosting pheasant populations is being converted into crop land.  One article I read said in South Dakota alone over 300,000 acres of land had been converted from CRP back to field crops this year.  I guess that's good for the farmers but bad for the pheasants.

Pheasant surveys come out in Late July. It will be interesting to see what happens. I don't think the flooding is as big of a deal for the over all pheasant populations as the loss of CRP due to high crop prices and demand. I think long term this will be really bad for pheasant populations and hunting in general.

With the loss/changes to CRP and the shear amount of rain and snow from this last winter, I'm not holding out high hopes for big numbers.  My friends in Iowa tell me the same thing.

The Iowa DNR has a computer model that is used to predict pheasant numbers. The model uses historic weather data (snow, temps and precipitation, etc.) to predict numbers and has been in existence for over 6 years. According to The Iowa DNR the model is a reliable indicator of the direction (trends) pheasant populations will follow. This spring, following the 10th snowiest winter in state history, and two months of abnormally wet and cool weather, it comes as no surprise that the model is predicting an overall decrease in pheasant numbers during 2008. The Iowa August Road side survey comes out September 15th. Stay tuned!
