I got this email from a visitor to the site.  I don't have a good answer for her.  Anyone have any ideas?  My gues is it has something to do with nesting, but I don't know:

We have a pheasant on our road (private dirt road about 1000 feet long) that has been chasing us in our cars when we are driving in and/or out on the road. It comes out of no where and just flies next to your car window or crosses in front of the windshield of the car. This has happended many times, morning and later in the afternoon and to more than 5 different vehicles. Why would they do this? Are they nesting or is there another reason why they would do this?

Does it happen throughout the year or only in the spring? My vote would be for protecting the nest as well. When I was young we used to ride our bikes down "redwing blackbird alley". The nesting blackbirds would swoop at our heads as we rode by during the spring.

I have heard of this before and that it is associated with the Pheasants breeding season that begins in March and runs through June. Apparently the reaction is a territorial response which should subside eventually!? It is kind of cool to see the bird as long as it doesn't start removing paint.

Maybe it was a killer pheasant with big, gnashing teeth...

Sorry, I had a Monty Python flashback there.

Pork,

I knew there was something I liked about you.

My favorite monty python quote- "I always prefered the outdoor life, hunting, fishing...getting out there with a gun and slaughtering  a few of God's creatures".  It is amazing what you can find on You Tube:

An absolute classic.  Thanks for sharing.

I almost cried with pride last month when my son asked me to watch "The Holy Grail".  Sometimes genetics is a good thing!
