Every year my buddies and I always debate how high or low we should hang our stands.  I like to be some where between 18-25 feet depending on the cover around me.  Some may say you don't need to be any higher than 15 feet.  Where others say 20 feet and higher.  I have had deer look right up at me when I am closer to the ground.  The stands that I have up in the air seem to be better, so that you don't get detected.  Some people may have a fear of heights and feel more comfortable at the lower heights.  What are your thoughts?

We hang our hunter stands with the platforms at around 18-25 feet depending on location. All of our sets have two stands with the camera stand 4-5 feet higher in most cases. So the camera stands are usually 23- to 30 feet off the ground. Your eye level is 29 to 36 feet off the ground. It can feel a bit hairy when you first climb into those camera stands, especially if you're overlooking a ravine.

If you're 15' off the ground where I hunt, you may as well be sitting on the ground!  The deer down south are just so dang spooky.  They can pick you off from a mile away if you're not high enough or have good cover.  I try to get 22'-25' with my lock-on's and use my climbers to get 30'+.

It helps to have a climber or a nice tree ladder. Screw in steps are just too haphazard for me to climb 20 feet or more. Tree ladders have really helped me get higher in the tree without losing my mind.

I have most of my stands around twenty five feet, I think its not so much the height, as the level of concealment. If you are in the right tree with the right cover the deer won't pick you off. I have shot deer from stands that were old ten feet up, but I had good cover around the stand. But I also have hunted stands that were over forty feet off the ground. Deer never see you that high, but it can be interesting if the wind picks up, its like a tree rodeo.
