With Temps In The 20's at night here in Wisconsin the lakes and ponds appear to be frozen up but I'm still seeing ducks and geese in the cut corn.  Are these ducks just passing through or do you think they are sticking around on a river or something for the winter.  I would think it is really frozen out further north???

IF YOU CAN'T FIX IT WITH A HAMMER, YOU'VE GOT AN ELECTRICAL PROBLEM

What are your day time highs????    we have been hitting the high teems and low 20 most nights here in Va.  Most days we are in the 50s so no major freezing here. Some morning our lakes freeze around the edges and is gone by mid day.  I'm pretty sure your rivers are loaded with the fowl!

On the way into the office this morning the thermometer on my truck read 7.  We are headed for a high of 20 today and I took the day off to get a couple of hours of hunting in this afternoon.  The weather is relative (in my opinion).  You get used to it, dress for it and just do what you want too.  They are calling for highs in the teens all of next week.  We should see our first negative temps of the year then.  Having just dug a hole for a new building I'm doing, the frost is about a foot deep right now.

If there is a good reliable source of open water and the snow isn't too thick, mallards will stick around for a long time. Many mallards don't go any further south than Southern Wisconsin. Look below dams or near narrow spots on rivers for open water. If you find open water, you will probably find ducks. It's January 16th here in St. Croix County, WI. We just finished up with 4 weeks of high temps below 15 degrees and night time lows in the negatives. We went about 10 days just barely getting above 0 degrees F. There is easily 8" of base layer snow on the ground and it's been that way for weeks.

Yet I look out my back window and see mallards on the Kinnickinick River every morning. There are many springs and rapids that keep pockets of the river open all year round. As long as there is some open water the ducks never leave. The season has been closed for almost 2 months up here but when we get a good freeze up during the season, the hunting really turns on for people who do their homework. Find the open water, find the ducks. Red legs up for everybody!

We are just coming out of a deep freeze here in Va. As ponds and lakes start to thaw, things are starting to get back to normal. Our general duck goes out on the 30th so we have to work fast.
