I'm about as "old school" as a body can get., been doing the same "O" some"O" as long as I can remember...in the turkey woods anyway! BUT, this year I've changed up a bit.  Two new items that will be going along are the Thermacell. Tired of fighting "de bugs" Also bought a "Backtrac", made by Bushel. I've felt for a long time ,something like this would be the ticket. I hope to roost a bird, get back to the truck in the dark and be sitting back under that same roosted bird the following morning...well in advance!

I'm familiar with the Thermacell and will be interested to hear your review. I'm not familiar with the Backtrac. Is it some kind of GPS?

Yes it is beans. It only has 3 way points, and 2 buttons.  it's pretty simple to use!   You can punch in truck in the morning, head to you favorite X and then pull your truck back up. As simple as that..... No scrolling thru a bunch of screens or pushing a bunch of buttons!

My hope is to leave my truck in the evening, (to roost a bird) with my truck entered into the Backtrac, find/roost my turkey, make him my X  for the next morning. THEN...With the turkey over my back, head back out to the truck with a smile on my face....if it will do that for me,I'll be one happy man!

Up north we don't need those thermacells for most of turkey season but I've seen a lot of southern hunts on TV and it looks like the skeeters are real tough to deal with down there. That backtrac sounds like a real scaled down GPS. Does it cost a lot less than a GPS? Sounds like yur gettin less features.

It is a scaled down GOPS, most of the big box stores have them between$59.00-$69.00

Well, the Back Trac is tried and true now...... Just get out of the truck, hit the on/powerup botton, punch til you see a car on the screen, then "0".....once you do that, you can cut it off and go anywhere you want to...to find home, just cut it back on and follow the arrow and distance back.               Easy as 1,2,3 !

I looked into that BackTrac for my wife and I. She wants one of those Garmin wrist watches for running to track distance and heart rate. I told her the BackTrac might be a good solution if she just wants to track distance.   Then the whole family could use it the rest of the time.  I could find my car a lot easier after a Brewer game.

Most of the reviews I've read are positive, with ease of use and cost highly rated. A few mentioned that you need to famililiarize yourself with the features because it is possible to hit the wrong thing and lose your waypoint. That would be a big problem for me in the grouse woods! A little preparation and practice is recommended before a live hunt.

Thermacell is on my list for the back deck this year. We live near a pond with lots of skeeters around.

I noticed the new GPS enabled bowmount trolling motor from Minkota in the latest Outdoor Life. Its like having a wireless anchor, or a hands free trolling rig. For $400, I think it sounds like a great value.
