If you had to master one sound or call with a diaphram call what would it be for spring turkey hunts? I am working on the cutting call? What do you guys think? |

First, focus on the locator call, or "yelp." Mimicking the call of the boss hen, it is the fundamental call used to attract Toms. - Archer |

To answer your question, I'd have to say the hen yelp. While I use/carry most all the calls in my vest. I feel the slate/glass friction call makes the most realistic turkey sounds in the woods. BUT, to a master caller, they all can sound some kind of good |

I must admit I've never been able to master a mouth call. I think my pallet is just to small but I would focus on the yelp as well. I usually use a box call or good slate call. In fact I will often mix them up. |

I guess it's something you just have to decide you will master! One thing for sure, the calls are NOT the same, keep trying one manufacturer after the other. You will hit on one you like. When you do, with time, you'll have em running..... to ya.....not away |

I'm pretty frustrated with the diaphram call. I think I might try and make one of those wing bone calls you all have been talking about. |

Joe, I had a ton of trouble getting the mouth call to work to. I ended up trying a few different brands and trimming the call down some till I found one that is comfortable. Once you get the hang of it it is pretty easy. Stick with it. It is a great call when turkeys get in close. |

They sell some turkey mouth calls with a plastic "dome" on top of it that helps you learn how. I had to trim the call down a lot to fit in my pallet, but it sure worked for me. Now I don't need the plastic piece and can make the vocalizations fairly well. |

I think the turkey calls will cost you much less then the girl in the long run. |
