What does everyone do to keep their dog in shape in the off season?  I have a golden who is getting fat and lazy and I'm looking for some creative ideas.

Durring the heat of the summer swiming is great exercise for your dog.  I also get my rollerblades on and take the dog out for a skate.

When it gets to hot out I don't do a lot with the dog, but come September I start getting him out running hard.  I have one of those doggie drivers and I hit tennis balls in the park for him to retreive.  I don't know what it does for my golf game, but it wears the dog out.

I've been hearing allot about water retrieving tournaments lately. The basic idea behind this summer tournament is a hunter and dog are placed in a duck blind by a pond. Two sporting clays are launched over the hunters head out into the pond. The hunter shoots at the clays and for each one that is hit a retrieving dummy is launched into the pond. The hunter then has his dog retrieve the dummies. The event is timed and points are established by shots taken, clays broken and time to retrieve. I believe there is a element of dog behavior in there as well.

I know our local sporting clay club has a tournament every year. It is a lot of fun and of course he has some practice times so that's always good for keeping the dog in shape in the hot weather.

I try and get my dog out running down a golf ball early in the morning while it is still cool.  He loves to fetch my drives into the park behind our house.

I have found that joining a good retriever club or hunt club is a great way to keep my dog in shape during the summer months. These groups meet on a regular basis and work on different aspects of training. They also have some fun events and the schedule gets me out of the house to.

I usually lay off in the heat of the summer and then try to slowly pick it up mid-August.  By September I'm running the dog in the fields every couple of nights to build up some stamina.
