So what is your favorite gun in that gun rack of yours. The one you wouldn't be caught dead in that deer stand without. Tell us the brand, calibur and how many deer you've taken with that trusted friend. I'll start:
Mine has to be my Weatherby 270 bolt action with a 10 power nicon scope. I sight it in every year but there is never really a need. It is dead on at 200 yards. I've had it for about 12 years and love it. I've never had a blank season with it so I know it's taken at least 12 deer and a few years of earn a buck I doubled up. |

I have a great 30 odd 6 Pump with a 6 power scope. This gun was passed down to me from my grandfather when I was 18 and in addtion to the countless deer he harvested with this gun it got me my first buck as well as many more to follow. I don't know how old it is but I haven't even thought about purchasing another gun for deer. |

I don't know if it's my gun of choice but I have a winchester 30/30 lever action with a 10 power scope. It was my first deer gun 20 years ago and it was used then. It still works great and is nice for long walks as well. |

So, this is where everybody is hanging out>>>>
Not really into deer hunting anymore, not like I used to be.... I've been chasing "de feathers" more of late! But when I do head out to the woods, My smoke pole is in my hand. I've got a TC Encore in 50 cal. and also have a 270 barrel with it, both scoped out and ready to rock and roll, killed deer with both but anymore, just soon "blow smoke" |

That's quite the selection. I just got one of those TC Pro Hunters so now that is my gun of choice. |

Bought my TC several years ago. As I "tested and tuned" my new toy, I said to myself, why not add this, should be able to turn the hammer instead of buying "the attachment" Low and behold, the very next year..... The Pro-hunter, it's everything the Encore should have been. Having said that, still love my Encore |

I love that lever action. got it toped with a short Leopold, 1.25 to 5 i think and man does it rock a whitetail with the Leverevolution ammo!
I have a TC Encore too, but i am partial to the Marlin.
Taken several good bucks.

Been finding myself wanting a lever action as well. Always felt like I'd like to have on, now with the new ammo that's out, it's a killing machine! Did use one my bud owned a few years back to let the air out of a big old doe..... It's was cool, but his was scoped, I think i'd leave mine open sights.... like the cowboys used!!! |

Jeff, Welcome to the site. We look forward to chatting with you. My first gun was a old hex barrell 30/30 lever action I borrowed from my grandfather. I loved that gun. It made me feel like I was in the old west and I could squeeze of rounds pretty fast. It wa ded on and nice and light for those deer drives I always got stuck doing through the thick WI swamps. |

Any of you guys "into slug guns". We have about half our counties here in Va. that are "shotgun only"..... so in the general season, I have a scoped Rem 870 that is the cat's behind. It has a FULLY RIFLED& SCOPED and with Winchester 1 oz. slugs. It's bad to the bone out to 150. And what's gets me going..... IS THE REACTION TO THE HIT |

Although I rarely gun hunt near my home when I do (Shotgun only zone) I also use a remmington 870 with a slug barrel. It is a great gun and dead on out to 60 yards. I've never had to take more then one shot at a deer with that thing. I am jeleous of your set up though. I don't have a scope. |

My personal favorite is an old .300 Savage with a twilight scope that was handed down from my Grandfather. It has killed elk & and mule deer (not by me) and many whitetail. |

My dad is digging out his dad's .300 Weatherby. My grandfather had a left handed model and passed it on to him. So Pops let me use his Remington Model 742 30-06 Semi-auto this year. I shot it a few years back but really wasn't confident with it. This year I had a chance to shoot it on a range at more realistic distances and gained a lot of confidence. Shot two deer with it this fall and both deer were, as Uncle John says, DRT(dead right there). Pops told me a few weeks ago that he's shot enough deer with that gun and it's my turn so I guess I inherited it. It is a hell of a lot of fun to shoot now that I feel comfortable with it. |

My favorite is an old Winchester .30-.30 "Canadian Centenial" edition given to me by my grandfather. He gave it to me in high school, but I didn't start hunting deer until after college. I took 5 deer with it after that. It made me feel like a cowboy, lever action with the big octagon barrel. It worked great on drives with the open iron sights and light weight.

Well.....
I've had a lot of "favorite" deer rifles over the years.
First one was the 2cond gun I ever bought with my own hard earned money. Winchester '94 30-30. I guess that was late summer '73. Cost me $100 out the door including a box of shells. Killed a lot of deer with that gun over the next 7-8 years. Always shot 'em up close. Open sights. Gave it to my step-brother when he turned 13 'cause he wanted to learn to hunt deer.
Got into my early 20's and got all excited about "long range". Started shooting scoped guns. 30-06. Had a handful or two of them over the years. Loved 'em all, but don't know as any of them were really "favorites".
In my early to mid 40s, I got excited about using smaller, faster rounds. Bought a Remmy model 7 .243. That was a nice gun. If you placed your shot right, it put them down like they were hit by an 18 wheeler. Probably had more 1 shot, DRT, didn't take a step, kills with that gun than any other. But I learned that with a less than perfect shot tracking often took much longer than with a 30 caliber. Got rid of the .243.
Last year I decided I was tired of shooting deer across open fields. I missed being back up in the hills in the heavy woods and killing them "up close and personal". So I went looking for another levergun. Bought a Henry Big Boy .357. Shot 2 bucks with it. I am in love again!!!! Both bucks at less than 25 yards. One was DRT. The other took 2 steps and fell. PLENTY OF BLOOD! If either of them had run, trailing would have been easy!
So my favorite deer rifle is a Henry .357. |

That is a nice piece 2few. And I agree, shooting up close is so much more fun than the open spaces stuff. Keep poundin' them! -CL |

Thanks Chris!
I'm gonna get after them HARD this year! One of them messed up my convertible and I am ANNOYED!!!! Lets see....I can take 4 with a bow during the early season, then 2 with a rifle, then 2 more with a muzzleloader and 4 more during the late bow season IF, I can get some permission down in Fairfield County. Yup! My goal this year is to whack 'em and stack 'em!
Now I just need to get some of the folks that are asking for meat to give me a hand with the butchering! |

Some of my favorite rifles over the years have been the ones I had in my hands when I made some fantastic shot or killed a very good deer. I was shooting a Winchester 94 30-30 when I killed my first deer and my last deer 135th was with a Browning X-bolt 325WSM, dont ask me why I kept count. I think erginomics has a lot to do with what my favorite deer rifle is. By now I have come to the conclusion I could kill a deer with anything.
Right now the X-Bolt feels good in my hands and I shoot it well. I have yet to name the rifle but it will most likely be named after one of the X-Men females. My Savage 99 in 308 felt good but it was not as accuarate as I like, and the Mountain Rifle is too light. I dont like Thompson Encores at all, but hunt with one sometimes. I realy liked my Ruger 77 in 350 Rem Mag but I tradede it. I have a real fancy Styer Manlicher 270 that I seldom use. The H&R Buffalow Classic in 45-70 is the most effective DRT gun but not an erginomic wonder. Then we have "The Thing" a CZ combination gun. If you want one now it is a Brno Combination gun, mine being in 12 ga over 30-06. This is the gun that has no mercy on Louisiana deer or boar. Out to 50 yards with 000 buckshot, even if they are running flat out, they only die tired. From the stand it is good to 300 yards I did that shot too one time.
Now that I think about it I'll name the 325 WSM "Rouge" after the little Southern gal in X-men, as you know no one can touch her. So my favorite deer rifles are The Thing and Rouge. They both feel sweet in my hands.
I dont like 243s, but I do like the 223 but it would be used strickly for neck and head shots. My all around favorite caliburs are the 30-06 the 325 WSM and the 45-70, on deer they realy are DRT cartriges, as well as most everything else.
My dream list when I really do become a rich outdoor writer (already famous) , is a Marlin Guide Gun in 45-70 and a CZ-527 in 223.

I want to see the 527 FS and the 550 FS in 6.5X55 SE I know you have hidden, you really know how to torture an Outdoor Writer. And since I know you are quite a hand with words as well write us a little article about those rifles, they make me do everything around here.
