So my friends and I had a discussion this weekend about deer hunting in general.  You know, the old story telling and exaggerations.  One of my friends raised a great question that I thought would be fun to discuss on the forums here with all you deer hunters.  Which deer season is your favorite?  When I was asked this question, I had no hesitation...BOTH!! As long as it's deer season, either gun or bow, I'm a happy camper.  But in all seriousness, my favorite would have to be bow.

I say this for a few reasons. One:  I think bow hunting is much more challenging.  With high powered rifles and guns, it seems like anyone can get out there and take a deer at 400 yrds.  I love the challenge of having to get within at least 40 yards if not closer of a deer and still make a always difficult shot as your heart beats out of your chest.

Two:  During bow season, at least where I hunt in Southern Wisconsin, there are far fewer hunters in the woods, meaning you're hunting the deer and their patterns, not just deer running for their lives away from other hunters.  I think it's hunting in one of it's purest forms; you vs. that great wild animal and his keen senses and patterns.

So my question is again, what is your favorite deer season and why?

Great question. I would have to agree with you, I love both seasons but Bow season is my favorite.

1. It falls during the rut and the deer are moving like crazy.
2. As HuntingNut says there are usually far less hunters in the woods during bow season. Nothing ruins a hunt faster then having a big orange pumpkin stop right under your tree after you took all the time to set up and get their early.
3. It's just a challenge.

Well last year I sat for 60 hours total in a tree stand and never saw a deer...it happened that I was a holding a crossbow at the time, but to me I cant see the difference in the use of any weapon if you are good with it. Of the 6 deer I finally did take last year the longest shot was only 75 yards and the rest were well within bow range. got three with a 45-70 and 3 more with a 325 WSM. However I hunt with what I feel like at the time depending on the season. I never took a shot at a whitetale at 400 yards, frankly never saw one that far while out hunting. If bow hunting is your favorite or gun hunting it is the wise hunter that keeps it to himself for the betterment of all hunting. It is the primadonna hunter that becomes the "Billy I'm better than you," that winds up causeing all the infighting that I have had to deal with for the last 5 years. If it is legal and ethical and you like it just do it and take your buddies and kids with you otherwise just go see what happens...it doesn't mater.

60 hours and not one deer. You need to come up to Wisconsin. It is pretty rare to not see a deer around these parts. Alot of the time they are out of range but I usually see at least one or two.

I'd have to go with bow. Since I started bow hunting I don't even like to get out in the woods during gun season.

Yea well thats Louisiana early deer season. It is very hot, the mosquitos are eating you up, forget sent lock, and the deer dont move much. The first cold snap hit on opening day of Primitive season, and i started knocking them down right and left. I had to quit by the first weekend in December as I limited out. Hopefully this year I can tag just one with the crossbow.

I would love to come to Wisconsin, bigger targets...

There must be some good hunting up in Leesville. In Mississippi and in Texas I spent lots of time up in a tree and tip-toeing around, only to kill one doe.
